In July 1996, driven by a demand from visitors to know more and to learn more, Tjapukai left Kuranda where it had operated its own theatre for the previous 9 years, and opened Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park.
Tjapukai is located at Caravonica, near Smithfield, 15 minutes north of Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway. It is both a magnificent attraction and a milestone accomplishment - a privately owned business with the majority shareholding forever in the hands of the tribal councils themselves. The 25 acre park combines the latest in theatre and technology, interactive activities with Aboriginal people, and features authentic traditional culture and customs.
Tjapukai's signature Boomerang Restaurant offers a sumptuous buffet lunch daily which includes a range of fish and meat dishes, healthy salads, homemade soups and breads accented with condiments, chutneys, dressings and salsas influenced by indigenous ingredients such as mountain pepper, lilli pilli, quandongs and other bush foods. Opening times and show times have been tailored to the needs of the visitor, and day tours and packages are also available. Tjapukai By Night Tjapukai By Night is a powerful and personal experience that is winning hearts and minds! Gadja and Quinkan spirits introduce the Dreamtime, where guests are taken to become an interactive part of an ancient corroboree ritual, climaxing in the ceremonial making of a fire.
Then, the Tjapukai guide the guests along a flamelit pathway to a dinner banquet of the region's best food and wines. The final performance occurs afterwards as the Tjapukai claim the stage, presenting indigenous culture with their inimitable blend of Broadway-style theatre and black humour.
